~ madhubani painting: Krishna and milkmaids (1) ~

Krishna and Gopis

The love mysticism that is associated with the stories of the youthful Krishna and the milkmaids (gopis) is evoked by this painting in which he seems to be emerging from an almond-like central area in somewhat the manner of a resurrected Christ in medieval Christian iconography. The place is the Vraja forest and the time is a perpetual spring in which everything bursts with new life.
